Honolulu International Airport was named the No. 1 most punctual airport by Forbes Traveler Magazine. The magazine noted the airport is served by the nation's most punctual carrier, Hawaiian Airlines.
Forbes said uncongested airspace and sunny skies also had a positive effect on the airport's 83.7 percent on-time arrival rate and 84.9 percent on-time departure rate for the first five months of 2008.
Kahului was named the nation's second most punctual airport, down from first place last year. It has an on-time performance rate of 84.2 percent.
The magazine analyzed the 50 busiest airports in the United States, or those with more than 147,000 flight operations in 2007, according to the most recent data from the Federal Aviation Administration. Then the magazine averaged each airport's monthly arrival and departure statistics for the first five months of 2008 using data from FlightStats, a Portland-based company that tracks historical and real-time flight information.
So the next time you're planning an inter-island trip to or from your Kaanapali condo or Lahaina home, you can be at ease that your island hopping should be an easy going affair.
