Taste of Maui Legends and Lore Sunset Cruise

Although going on a cruise with the Pacific Whale Foundation sounds like a tourist activity, the overwhelmingly positive feedback from this non-profit organization as well as the theme of this cruise made us decide to share it with you. Whether you have been living on Maui for quite some time or you are considering a move here, the lure of the Hawaiian islands probably has to do with more than just nice weather. If you are like us, Maui isn't just beautiful beaches and sunsets, but a cultural treasure, unique in countless ways and posessing of its own potent mysteries. Just as the birds of Maui evolved to differ so greatly from all other species on earth because of their isolation, so too did Hawaiian culture. Without any significant outside influences to disrupt the people of the islands, their traditions and beliefs blossomed into something totally their own. Their gods came to be seen in symbols of the natural world such as the shark, lava, or the sun. Lore was passed from generation to generation, not on the pages of books, but through the art of hula and song. Even the cuisine of Hawaii today is ripe with historic significance and tradition.
Considering the wonder that Hawaiian culture inspires in locals and visitors alike, we find it prudent to remind people, when we can, of good opportunities to get back in touch with what Hawaii is all about. The Pacific Whale Foundation Cruise that peaked our interest is based on the legends and lore of Maui. Culture and history will be narrated live as passengers enjoy drinks and many incredible local-style appetizers on this two hour sunset cruise. There will be traditional Hawaiian chant and music as well as a special hula in celebration of West Maui. Guests are even invited to learn how to play a traditional Hawaiian board game called konane and make their own ti leaf kupe'e (wrist lei). This cruise is a new addition to the Pacific Whale Foundation's collection of wonderful activities, and the 22nd of November will only be the second time it has been offered so far. If you can't make it this month, don't worry. It is now being offered on a monthly basis.
