Maui's Olowalu Restoration Day

Olowalu is the front door to West Maui. If you want to make a good first impression with a house you own, you have to keep your front door in good condition!
Driving in from Kahului or Kihei via Honoapi'ilani Highway, residents and visitors pass through the tiny little beach town of Olowalu. Known for its incredible snorkeling and convenient beach accessibility, Olowalu is a place frequently visited by many beach goers. Since you can't miss it on your travels to and from West Maui, it's especially important to preserve its natural beauty and cultural heritage.
The Olowalu Cultural Reserve consists of 75 acres which contain many important archaeological sites and historic features. Some of these include the Ka'iwalow heiau, the Awalua Cemetery, many historic burials, petroglyphs, and the historic Olowalu Church, to name a few.
A volunteer work day is being held by the Olowalu Cultural Reserve, a non-profit organization. The project of the day is to assist in rebuilding an ahupua'a (division of land). The work will entail removal of non-native plant species, building taro patches, restoring trails and planting Native Hawaiian plants and agricultural products.
This kind of work is very satisfying, especially for those who like to lend a hand to keep the Maui community at its natural best. It is also a wonderfully educational experience that is ideal for both adults and children. The volunteer day is on Saturday, February 20th from 7-11a.m. Click to learn more about Olowalu.
