Maui and the State's Unemployment Drop

It was nice to hear the news that Hawaii's unemployment claims dropped by 7.7 percent in the week ending July 31st compared to the same week last year. The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism recently released a report indicating that there were 2,348 claims as opposed to 2,543.
As most of the population of Hawaii resides on Oahu, they had the highest number of claims at 1,237, which was 108 fewer than the same week last year. That was an 8 percent decrease.
Kauai had 160 claims for a decrease of 3.6 percent with 6 fewer claims than last year. The Big Island had a 5.8 percent decrease with 31 fewer claims for a total of 506.
And what about Maui? Well Maui had the biggest drop of all, with 11.5 percent fewer claims filed as opposed to the same period last year. There were 392 claims, compared with 443.
With the increase in visitor arrivals combined with increased visitor spending on the island, there has definitely been a slow but steady upswing in the economy. Looking forward to more of the same good news in the months to come. Hopefully the holiday season will provide a nice rejuvenating boost to all the islands.
