One of the most influential figures in alternative rock and former lead singer of The Smiths, Morrissey will perform in concert 20 years after his first Hawai‘i performance. Since launching his solo career in 1987, Morrissey has released nine studio albums, sold out concerts in minutes and sold millions of records worldwide. His first two solo singles, "Suedehead" and the gorgeous "Everyday Is Like Sunday" were significant global hits in 1988 and his first album, Viva Hate (referencing The Smiths' breakup) was commercially and critically well-received. His 1992 album, Your Arsenal easily ranked as the hardest-rocking of his career, and in the USA, he managed to sell out the Hollywood Bowl even faster than The Beatles had. His American success helped Morrissey deliver an equally strong fourth album, 1994's Vauxhall and I, which earned him his first Top 50 singles chart entry in the U.S. with the MTV-supported "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get." His ninth studio album, Years Of Refusal (2009) saw Morrissey tie his highest U.S. chart debut on the Billboard 200. Presented by BAMP Project in association with Rick Cooper Music  -MACC

Natural History

Formosan Koa
(Acacia confusa)

The Formosan koa is a fast-growing shrub or upright branched tree with gray bark that can grow to 50 feet tall. It resembles the native koa, to which it is closely related in many ways. However, the leaves are narrower and straighter, about 4 inches long by a third of an inch wide. The leaves have no midribs.

The plant is prized for its bright golden profusion of intensely fragrant puffball flowers that are a half-inch in diameter. A corolla of four or five tiny free yellow petals surround the burst of yellow stamens. The tree also has shorter, narrower pods than the native koa. Each pods hold flat, round, bean-like seeds.

It is a popular ornamental that spreads by seeds and has gone wild. The trees can form stands in pastures and disturbed sites in the forest. They thrive at lower elevations and are adaptable and can grow in poor soils and they do prefer sunny places. The trees flowers throughout the year and can be particularly spectacular in the spring. The fallen leaves apparently keep the area under the trees free of weeds and the plant is essentially fire-resistant since fire will not carry under the tree due to the lack of fuel. The tough trees also make good windbreaks in windy areas.

The Formosan koa was introduced into Hawaii from Taiwan and the Philippines by the Board of Agriculture and Forestry and the Hawaiian Planters' Association about 1915. Because of its beauty and adaptability, the use of the plant spread throughout the islands and it was commonly used in landscaping including State facilities such as schools, parks and airports. They thrive in poor soils, wet or dry, in sunny spots at lower elevations. They were also planted as windbreaks along windy coastlines. (One government publication says that since 1925 the Division of Forestry planted 295,000 trees in the forest reserves of all the islands to replace vegetation on severely eroded areas.

The popular ornamental spreads by seeds and it has gone wild. The trees form stands in pastures and disturbed sites in the low-lying mesic forests and apparently their fallen leaves keep the areas around them free of weeds and underbrush. This means that the plants are essentially fire-resistant since fire will not carry under the tree due to lack of fuel. However, it also means that the trees crowd out native vegetation that doesn't stand a chance of competing with these tough guys. On Maui, the plants have naturalized in pastures and forests, especially on the North Shore. (You can see stands of them from the parking lot at Twin Falls in Huelo.)

In their native Southeast Asia the trees are harvested for wood and for tannins that are used for dyes. (The shredded bark of the Formosan koa is used to produce a yellow or red dye.) In Hawaii, most of the trees have not grown big enough to be used as lumber. However, Hawaiian woodcarvers and ukulele craftsmen find the hard pale brown wood useful. The seeds can be fashioned into lei.

Despite the usefulness of the trees, the State's Alien Species Coordinator of the Division of Forestry & Wildlife of the Dept. of Land and Natural Resources has listed the plant on its "Most Invasive Horticultural Plant" list and urges people to avoid planting and growing them.

Haycraft Park

At the northeast end of Ma'alaea village on Hauoli Street at the end of a string of condominium buildings, there is a small community-developed County beach park that was once nicknamed the "People's Park." It's a lovely young family park, with a couple of picnic tables and barbecue pits, and a shower and water fountain as part of the facilities. It's a good place to take babies and young tykes for a bit of water play.

According to writer John R.K. Clark, author of HAWAII PLACE NAMES, the park was "cleared and landscaped by Kenny Haycraft and his brother-in-law Vern Johnson who adopted the site in 1985 as part of the county's Adopt-A-Park volunteer program." They did a nice job.

(Since the mid-1980's, Maui County's Dept. of Parks and Recreation has encouraged groups of people to "adopt a park" and help maintain and develop it. Usually larger groups of people adopt a park and individuals participate in broader-based community-organized efforts.)

The tiny park is on the Ma'alaea end of the three-mile long Ma'alaea Beach, which stretches all the way to north Kihei. Walkers and joggers like the hard-packed fine sand of the beach. They say early mornings and evenings are best for walking and running along the beach. Strong winds tend to sweep through the area for most of the day, making it a great place for windsurfers and kite-boarders. Offshore snorkeling and surfing opportunities are also an attraction.

Ma'alaea Beach is partially backed by Kealia Pond. The pond was established in 1953 as a 300-acre wildlife refuge. In 1992, this refuge joined the National Wildlife Refuge system, having grown to 700 acres of protected land. This refuge was established primarily for Hawaiian stilts and coots and is still the home of many other water birds like the Hawaiian duck, black-crowned night heron, golden plover and ruddy turnstone as well as a resting place for migratory water fowl. Hawksbill turtles come to shore to lay eggs on the beach and (before the fencing was put in along the beach) also tended to try crossing the road, heading for the inland pond, sometimes in the middle of heavy traffic.

One other denizen of the pond impacts residents along this stretch of coast. There's a teeny, brownish, two-winged fly, known as a "midge," that breeds in the water of the pond. These imported bugs are truly harmless. However there are so very many of them. Clouds of mindless midges swarm the area surrounding the Kealia Pond Wildlife Refuge unless a large quantity of methoprene pellets are spread around in the deeper sections of the wetlands during the wettest times of the year. (Prime midge season is between mid-December and mid-April.) The methoprene is a larvicide that kills the bugs before they have a chance to swarm.
The midges don't bite or do anything nastier than crawl around on everything, clinging to screens, falling over dead in great heaps, and things like that. They are a bane and blight to the residents of the area. For the most part, the control efforts of the National Fish and Wildlife Service have helped to mitigate the midge problem.

Remnants of the Ma'alaea Community Garden are visible from outside an enclosed fenced area next to the small parking lot of the Haycraft Beach Park. From the late 1990's until mid-2011, when the lease changed hands, the organic garden was maintained and used by Pastor Agapito Sarmiento and a crew of devoted community volunteers. The thatched-roof "Hawaiian Hale," in the middle of flower beds on the property was used for a number of community events, including religious services.
